Dr. Helen Messier is a national leader in providing hands-on individualized comprehensive medical and wellness care. She is a passionate advocate for Functional Medicine, which is personalized medicine that deals with primary prevention and uncovering the root causes that lead to illness. It enables individualized care through identifying a person’s unique biochemical and physiological imbalances. Dr. Messier strives to understand each individual’s unique biochemistry and environment in order to personalize healthcare to a molecular level. She is passionate about the role genetics plays in a person’s overall health, and is a leader in applying this information clinically. She has a personal interest in the role lifestyle plays in health, and is committed to a much broader view of healthcare and optimal wellness.
Dr. Messier received a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Genetics from the University of Alberta. While there she was awarded an Alberta Heritage Fund Scholarship to conduct genetic research, and taught laboratory studies to undergraduate students. Dr. Messier went on to earn a Ph.D. in Molecular Immunology from the University of Alberta with a focus on the genetic regulation of T-cell receptor genes. She completed post-doctoral studies at the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology in San Diego, California. She then won the Nat Christie Entrance Scholarship at the University of Calgary Medical School, completing her residency in Family Medicine in Calgary.
Dr. Messier pursued further post-graduate training in the following disciplines: Functional, Anti-aging, Nutritional and Integrative Medicine, She is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner, one of only 5 in Canada. Dr. Messier’s practice has included rural medicine, primary and walk-in care, geriatric medicine and hospice care. Currently she is chief medical officer for Shaughnessy Health in Vancouver BC, and the Medical Director of YouNique Genomics.
